Tom Baker

 Tom Baker who portrayed the fourth Doctor from 1974 to 1981 is widely known as the fan favorite Doctor of all-time. He was born Thomas Stewart Baker January 20, 1934 in Scotland Road, Liverpool. Tom left school at 15 to become a Roman Catholic monk, and remained in the monastic life for six years, leaving after he lost his faith. He then served in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1955 until 1957. That was also when he took up acting as a hobby.

Tom was part of Laurence Oliver's National Theatre company from the mid 60s through the early 70s, and had his first big break in the 1971 film "Nicolas and Alexandra" with the role of Rasputin. In 1974, Baker took on the role of the Doctor from Jon Pertwee. Baker was working on a construction site at the time. He quickly made the part his own. As the Doctor, his eccentric style of dress and speech (particulary his trademark scarf and love for jelly bellies) made him an immediatly recongnisable figure.

Tom played the Doctor for seven consecutive seasons, making him the longest-serving actor in the role on-screen. Tom Baker is often regarded as the most popular of the Doctors. In polls conducted by "Doctor Who Magazine", Baker has lost the "Best Doctor" catagory only three times: Once to Sylvester McCoy in 1990, and twice to David Tennant in 2006 and 2009.

Tom Baker has returned to his role as the fourth Doctor with "Big Finish Productions". He is slated for at least six audio stories also staring his former companion Leela (Louise Jameson). The first is to be released in January 2012.
